Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui fumes at VAR decision in 2-1 defeat to former club Real Madrid

Sevilla reacted furiously to the VAR decision that prevented them from going 1-0 up against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Spanish television claimed Sevilla coach Julen Lopetegui said: 'this is a disgrace!' several times after referee Juan Martinez Munuera had ruled out Luuk de Jong's header from an Ever Banega corner.

The official was advised to review the goal pitchside for a possible foul on Eder Militao and decided Militao was deliberately blocked by Nemanja Gudelj in the build up.

'Logically I’m upset,' said Lopetegui. 'We were very good in the first half. We took the lead with a perfectly legal goal. And you can’t separate that from what happens in the rest of the game.

'They scored and we got back into but the key for them was that they scored again so quickly. We had chances to level again but it was not possible.

'I do not understand why they rule out the goal and that is after seeing it calmly afterwards. Sincerely I do not know why they ruled it out.'

Sevilla's Sporting Director Monchi added: ‘We are very upset, very indignant. I refuse to analyse the game after the ruled out goal.’

Asked things evened out in the second half when the ball struck Munir’s elbow as he lay on the turf and the Sevilla goal was not ruled out, Monchi added: ‘If they rule the second goal out maybe I would have gone down to the pitch and taken the players off.’

Madrid won the game 2-1 to go top of La Liga, putting pressure on rivals Barcelona to match their result on Sunday.
