Solskjaer admits a number of players are playing for their future at Man Utd

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits a number of Manchester United players are playing for their future at the club.

United have the option of an additional year to tie Lingard to the club until 2022 but he is now represented by Paul Pogba's agent Mino Raiola, who said last week he would not move any of his clients to United.

"I think every player is playing for his future at the biggest clubs," Solskjaer said. "You have to perform and you have got to do well.

"We all have different roles in it, at a different age you have got more influence behind the scenes as well to be one of the main characters. Both on and off the pitch, everyone here has a lot to play for."

United have failed to score in three of their last five games and lost two of their last four in the Premier League as they prepare to welcome Manchester City in the League Cup semi-final first leg. Solskjaer is adamant they are improving, though.

"I think we are improving," he stressed. "I think the Burnley and the Newcastle games, even at home - we have lost one game at home this year - and there are more and more teams dropping back [with their style]. We are improving all the time.

"It is not just getting in behind them. It is getting in between them like we did against City. We have so much pace up front that they drop and now we are getting a chance to run at the back four and back five. Teams are so well organised in the Premier League it is very seldom you play against team who are not fit or good quality."
