Valverde: I've apologised to Morata, but I had to commit that foul

Fede Valverde believes that he had no choice but to bring down Alvaro Morata in extra time of the Supercopa de Espana final.

With the game goalless in the 115th minute, the midfielder took out Morata as he was baring down on Thibaut Courtois' goal.

Valverde was sent off but still picked up the player of the tournament award after Real Madrid had triumphed on penalties.

"I've apologised [to Morata]," Valverde revealed as he was asked about the incident afterwards.

"It's not good what I did, but I had to do that.

"I'm happy for the trophy.

"When the penalties ended, I waited and I then I ran [onto the pitch].

"They congratulated me, but it's for everyone.

"For those who played, those who didn't and those who gave advice at half time.

"It's a triumph of the team."

Both Zinedine Zidane and Diego Simeone spoke to Valverde as he walked off the pitch following his red card.

"They supported me," Valverde said.

"I put up with a lot of anger because I'd left my team with one less player, but they were there to help me.

"Simeone also came up to me and not just anyone does this."

Valverde is enjoying an impressive breakthrough campaign at Real Madrid and he's pleased with how life is going.

"I'm very happy and I try to fight, to train, to play," he said.

"I enjoy every moment that happens in my life.

"I'm winning trophies, I'm going to be a father and I'm motivated to be happy."
