Madrid will have to play an untested defence against Man City

Real Madrid will face their biggest challenge of the season in England in their Champions League last 16 second leg and Zinedine Zidane has a lot to think about at the back.

Neither Thibaut Courtois nor Marcelo will be available for the Frenchman to call upon due to injury, nor will Sergio Ramos, who was sent off in the first leg against Manchester City.

Alphonse Areola, Ferland Mendy and Eder Militao are likely to come in as the replacements, while there is also the possibility that Nacho could feature.

Real Madrid's defence had been their great strength this season and, until their struggles in February and March, it was the reason they were leading LaLiga Santander.

But these three new faces are untested together.

Areola did well early in the season when Courtois was struggling, but the Belgian's return to form and the starting XI came as a blow to the backup and he's made mistakes when he's been chosen - even conceding four against Real Sociedad.

Militao has only played 13 times this season and his poor performance against Real Betis has some supporters worried.

It's true that he didn't play in his regular position - deputising on the right - but his performance was concerning.

That's precisely why Zidane hasn't ruled out the Nacho option, as he knows that he can usually rely on the Spaniard.

Mendy is the one who there are no doubts about.

The former Lyon player has been impressive this term and that he's seen Marcelo play ahead of him lately has come as a surprise.
