Serie A could consist of a total of 22 teams next season if the season has to be cancelled according to a report in today's print edition of La Repubblica.

Coronavirus has wreaked havoc on the Italian football calendar in recent weeks and a new government decree has only further complicated matters with all sporting events, including Serie A football, postponed until at least April 3.

With many games now needing rescheduling and not a lot of time left coupled with the fact the whole Coronavirus situation is entirely unpredictable, the season might just be called off.

Calling the season off would bring about many problems though such as who would be crowned champions, who would qualify for European competitions and then there is relegation and promotion from Serie B to worry about too.

As per this report, the Serie A teams who occupy the bottom three places, in the event the league is cancelled, will be spared from relegation. The top two in Serie B will however not be punished and they will still be promoted thus meaning Serie A will have two extra teams.

The report goes on to add that European football's governing body might even postpone the Euro 2020 in order to allow for seasons to be finished across the continent if it needs to come to that.
