Higuain's most shocking confessions

Higuain's most shocking confessions

Gonzalo Higuain is one of the most polarising players of recent times, loved by some and mocked by others.

His story is a fascinating one and it hasn't always been easy for the Argentine striker.

In this latest edition of our 'Shocking Confessions' series, we take a look at some of the most famous moments and quotes from the course of his career.

When he spoke of his fear at going out
While it has become normal during this time of coronavirus shutdown to stay at home, Higuain was doing this long before it was mandatory.

"I regret that I would avoid going out due to the fear of what someone might say to me," he has revealed.

"People speak about the money you earn, but you can't buy friends.

"I have played in the biggest leagues and tournaments for the biggest teams, something I couldn't have imagined when I was five years of age.

"So why should I worry what they say?

"When I realised this, I started going out more and living more."

When reflected on his misses with Argentina
Higuain has had some big misses in big finals for Argentina, both in the World Cup and the Copa America.

He has been heavily criticised for these misses and has opened up on this.

"It's not easy when they say 'this guy is a failure'," he lamented.

"It's true that we didn't achieve the objective of winning those tournaments.

"But did we fail?

"Reaching three finals isn't failure."

When he considered retiring
So harsh was the criticism of the player that he considered quitting.

"I was close to stopping playing, but my mother said I should continue," he revealed.

"If it was just down to me, I'd have quit already."

When he left Real Madrid
In 2013, the striker took the decision to leave Real Madrid and to sign for Napoli.

He insisted afterwards that he didn't leave on bad terms.

"It wasn't a heat-of-the-moment decision," he said.

"I made this decision with my family."

When he criticised De Laurentiis
Higuain's relationship with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis deteriorated towards the end of his time there, before his move to Juventus.

"There was no relationship," Higuain stated.

"His way of thinking wasn't the same as mine.

"My decision to leave was my decision, but maybe he led me to take it.

"I didn't want to be with him a minute more."

When he claimed he was kicked out of Juventus
While Higuain has had a good 2019/20 season at Juventus, he had to go out on loan in 2018/19 after Cristiano Ronaldo arrived.

"It was a blow," he said of that development.

"I didn't ask to leave, they kicked me out."
