Jurgen Klopp 'wants to meet Timo Werner to convince him to make £51m move to Liverpool'

Jurgen Klopp's plan to convince Timo Werner to join Liverpool has been thrown into doubt by the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

According to German newspaper Bild, the Reds boss is hoping to meet with Werner in person in a bid to talk him into a big money move to Anfield.

The RB Leipzig striker is said to have a £51million release clause which expires on June 15, giving Klopp just two months to finalise a deal.

However, government guidelines on non-essential travel and social distancing have left Klopp's plan to meet Werner face-to-face in tatters.

Sportsmail reported earlier this month that Liverpool had placed all contract talks and recruitment plans on hold due to the global pandemic - and the possible effects it could have on club finances.

Despite this, Werner remains Klopp's No 1 target as he looks to strengthen his attack with a player who has struck 27 goals in all competitions this season.

On Tuesday, Reds legend Jamie Carragher suggested that a move for the Germany international might have to be pushed back a year with this summer's transfer window still up in the air.

'Timo Werner to Liverpool?' questioned Carragher during an Instagram Live Q&A.

'It looked nailed on before the situation we're in now so it may affect transfers this summer.

'It may have to be put on the back burner, maybe for the following summer.'

Last week, Leipzig chief executive Oliver Mintzlaff claimed that he isn't concerned about the prospect of losing Werner to one of European football's giants.

Mintzlaff told Sky Sports Germany: 'I'm deeply relaxed about Werner.

'He hasn't signalled yet that he wants to leave at the end of the season and he doesn't have to. He has a contract until 2023.'
