Mendy has taken over from Marcelo

Early signs for Ferland Mendy at Real Madrid weren't too good, but when Zinedine Zidane gave him his chances he didn't pass them up.

Zidane's return to Real Madrid suggested that Marcelo was going to be a regular for him and the Brazilian simply needed more competition, so the coach gave his backing to the signing of Mendy.

Pre-season saw Mendy fall injured against Arsenal, though, and he played in two disappointing games early on this term - a 2-2 draw with Villarreal and a 3-0 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain.

But the changing of the guard came at the Camp Nou.

From then on, he has held down his spot at left-back and Marcelo has been backup, with that only changing in the second Clasico of the season.
