10 Amazing Lionel Messi Records That Were ‘Swept Under The Rug’

Lionel Messi has broken so many records in his glittering career that it’s normal for some to be lost in the shuffle.

There’s simply too many to mention regarding the Barcelona talisman thankfully @AFC_MXL has collated ten of Messi’s most underrated statistics for club and country in a Twitter thread.

To begin with, the six-time Ballon d’Or winner has scored the most goals in La Liga from a substitute in the 21st century and the most substitute goals in Copa America.

Of course, Messi typically starts from the off but on the odd occasion he’s on the bench, he regularly changes the game.

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone famously refused to celebrate a goal for his side because he saw Messi warming up – minutes later and his compatriot scored the winner for Barca.

He’s also scored six goals outside the box on the trot and is the only player to score in the World Cup in his teens, 20s and 30s.

The diminutive Argentine has failed to win the World Cup and some have been critical of his performances on the biggest stage for Argentina. Still, he holds the record for the most assists in World Cup history.

Aided by his outrageous technique and dead-ball proficiency, Messi has scored over 50 free-kicks goals and has notched more goals from set-pieces than any other club in the past few years.

He’s also the only player to score and assist in every competition in a single season, as well as the only player to win ‘The Best Player Of The Tournament’ award at least once in all international tournaments.

The 32-year old has a host of Champions League records belonging to him, including the most Champions League hat-tricks and being the only player to have netted an insane five goals in one game.
