De Gone? Premier League legend reveals big decision on Man United goalkeeper’s future after series of mistakes

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a big decision to make next season as regards the goalkeeping conundrum they now apparently face with David De Gea according to Premier League legend, Alan Shearer.

The goalkeeper was responsible for Tottenham’s goal in their 1-1 on Friday, further calling into question how good he really is.

Also, De Gea has made seven errors leading to opposition goals this season – the joint-most in the league – while Dean Henderson has impressed on loan at Sheffield United.

Shearer says boss Solskjaer has to decide whether to stick with De Gea or give Henderson a shot at becoming No.1.

He wrote in The Sun: “While United played very well in the second half, the goal they conceded was comical, with all of Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and David de Gea at fault.

“And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a massive decision to make in goal next season.

“Dean Henderson has had a taste of the limelight at Sheffield United and is not going to want to sit on the Old Trafford bench next season.

“It was another big error leading to a goal from De Gea, something we’ve seen too often. I know it was the first game back but I don’t want to make any excuses for him.

“There comes a time when you can’t keep accepting players making the same mistakes.”

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville claims De Gea’s form is more than just a blip and claims the keeper has been struggling for some time.

“He was the one player United could rely upon for the last four years but he’s not the same,” he said on the Gary Neville Podcast.

“He hasn’t been the same for some time. When form drops for six months it’s a blip but when it goes on for a year you start to worry. When it goes over two years it becomes more permanent.

“That is now a fair representation of what De Gea is as he’s making lots of mistakes. Ones he would never make – he was always somebody you could completely rely upon. It can only be a confidence thing. The arms, legs and body are the same – it’s got to be the mind.

“The reception he’s got in Spain has affected him. He’s even been booed by Spanish fans when he’s wearing the Spanish shirt. In the World Cup in 2018 he really struggled and from that, he’s doubted himself. Mentally he’s not quite the same.”
