Rohr Describes The Kind Of NPFL Players He’ll Invite To Super Eagles

Head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr has defended his decision for not inviting players in the Nigeria Professional Football League for national team selection.

Since his appointment four years ago, only Heartland goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa has had regular play time with the Eagles and many have accused the German of killing other talents in the NPFL.

Rohr, on the other hand, has said he has invited a total of 23 players from the domestic league since he took the Super Eagles job in 2016, but it became difficult to continue working with the players because most of them are leaving for greener pasture.

“Unfortunately, Nigeria professional football league is not playing like other leagues that are coming back, but they also have a chance to come in my team and you know I already invited 23 players from the Nigeria professional football league,” Rohr said.

“But mostly, I have the goalkeeper Ezenwa with me, but other players we invited into our team, after few days they go to Europe and they are sold to this or that team and it becomes difficult.

Rohr noted how unfortunate it is that the home-based Super Eagles failed to qualify for CHAN, and maintained that only the best players will be invited into the team.

“Also the Chan team, unfortunately, they didn’t qualify for the tournament in Cameroon, only the best players have the chance to come into my team.” he concluded.
