Sam Sodje Lauds Gov. Okowa Sports Initiatives


Erstwhile Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje said Delta State premier status as the home of sports is set to take a new dimension in the coming months under Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

In an exclusive chat recently, former Brentford and Charlton Athletic star stated that the governor is doing a lot to develop sports in the state to ensure Delta continues its dominance in national festivals.

It would be recalled that the State successfully hosted the 21st African Senior Athletics Championship, also known as Asaba 2018, at the Stephen Keshi Stadium and it is expected that state will strive to sustain this momentum and break new grounds by hosting future competition and discover young talents in the state.

The ex-Portsmouth and Notts County FC defender said his vision is come up new ideas aimed at discovering raw talents and give back to the society at large.

“The governor’s passion for sports is second to none. My vision is to keep supporting the state and help nurture upcoming talents into stardom, said the former Premier League star.
The former Portsmouth strong man who is now into full-blown construction equipment leasing company hopes to go into sports administration in the nearest future.

He further lauded Delta State Commissioner for Sports, Chief Tony Okowa for his selfless effort to ensure Edo 2020 Sports festival gets a new date after it was postponed due to Covid-19 outbreak.

The 11-man committee set aside to get a new date for the Games, which is made up of members of the COVID-19 Task Force (NCDC), Commissioners of Sports from the six geo-political zones of the country and representatives of the Sports Ministry, is headed by the chairman of Delta Sports Commission, Tony Okowa

” I work closely with Delta State sports commission on grassroot development as I definitely look to go into sports administration even though I’ve done some of my coaching badges,” he said.
