Benfica vs Sporting Lisbon Preview, Betting Tips and Odds.

Benfica vs Sporting Lisbon predictions for Saturday’s match in the Primeira Liga.

The hosts have nothing to play for but pride on Saturday
Benfica cruised to a 4-0 win away at relegated Aves last time out but will be disappointed to not still be in the title race heading into the final game of the season. Sporting could only manage a goalless draw at home to Vitoria Setubal on Tuesday and have now failed to score in three of their last four matches.

Benfica claimed a 2-0 win at Sporting when the pair met for their reverse league fixture in January and have only lost one of their last seven encounters against their local rivals. Sporting actually heads into Saturday’s final game of the season as the slight form favourites with three wins, two draws and one defeat from their last six matches, but have struggled against Benfica in recent seasons.

Defeat for Sporting could see the visitors slip down to 4th
Our prediction for under 2.5 goals being scored in Saturday’s clash is based upon the recent meetings between these two clubs and their performances on the road and at home this season. Four of the last seven meetings between these two clubs have produced under 2.5 goals, as have three of Benfica’s last six matches and five of Sporting’s last seven outings.

Half of the hosts’ home matches this season have produced under 2.5 goals as have half of Sporting’s away trips and with little resting on this game for either side, you can see why we’re expecting another low-scoring affair. As for a final scoreline, we’re predicting a 1-0 win for Benfica who have had the edge over their local rivals this season as well as in recent years. Benfica have won four of their last five games against Sporting and have kept a clean sheet in each of the duo’s last two encounters.

We’re expecting a tight and tense 90-minutes in Lisbon
Benfica have kept clean sheets in 56% of their home matches this season and Sporting only concede an average of 1.19 goals on their travels, which ties in nearly with our prediction for a 1-0 home win on Saturday. Sporting have more to lose on the final day of the season but have only won one of their last seven away games and are expected to struggle this weekend.
