Bologna vs Napoli Preview, Betting Tips and Odds

Bologna vs Napoli predictions as the Partenopei continue to chase down fifth placed Roma.

Napoli couldn’t find a way past AC Milan in their big clash on Sunday night, but the Partenopei picked up a 2-2 draw to continue their high-scoring form. That point left them in sixth place, with boss Gennaro Gattuso targeting a push for fifth in the final weeks of the season.

While the season started off horribly under Carlo Ancelotti, Napoli have seen things turnaround under Gattuso. With the Coppa Italia secured, a surge to fifth on the horizon and a chance of edging out Barcelona in the Champions League there’s plenty to look forward to for the Partenopei. However, they need to stay focused and finish on a high.

More trouble for Brescia defence
Bologna have conceded at least one goal in their last 27 Serie A games (45 in total in this period); the longest current streak without a clean sheet in the competition and the longest for the Rossoblu in their Serie A history. Their defensive issues hit them again at the weekend, as they drew 2-2 with Parma. They’ve now conceded 51 goals for the season, more than they had at this stage of the campaign in any of the last eight seasons.

In 2020, Bologna have won only one Serie A home game (D4, L3), 2-1 in February against second-bottom Brescia. Only bottom side SPAL have recorded fewer victories (zero). That comes down to their poor defending, with their only home clean sheet coming against SPAL. On top of that, the Rossoblu have conceded twice or more in six of their seven clashes with the top eight.

Napoli can continue scoring form
The visitors scored twice for the third game on the spin at the weekend, the ninth time they had scored twice in a Serie A game since the turn of the year. That run should continue here, as Napoli have scored at least two goals in each of their last six away trips to Bologna (19 in total, an average of 3.2 per game). With Bologna in trouble at the back, we are backing over 1.5 goals for Napoli on Wednesday.

A key part of Napoli’s scoring form has been Dries Mertens. The Belgian has scored 11 goals in 10 league appearances against Bologna – more than against any other side; among the players currently in the competition, only two have more goals against a single side: Higuaín against Lazio and Immobile against Sampdoria (both 12). Having scored in back to back matches, Mertens is our anytime goalscorer prediction here.

Napoli have won five of their six away Serie A games since the beginning of February (L1) – more than any other side in the same period. Given Bologna’s poor home return in 2020, we are backing the Partenopei to take the points. The visitors are unbeaten at sides below them, while they’ve scored exactly two goals in six of their last eight league games. Following that form, a 2-1 away win is our correct score prediction.
