Cardiff vs Derby predictions ahead of this Championship clash in the fight for the playoffs

Cardiff managed to hang on to their playoff spot at the weekend, despite losing at Fulham. However, that defeat has opened up a huge fight for the last place in the top six. Cardiff is being chased by no fewer than six clubs, who are all within six points of the Bluebirds. Among them are 10th placed Derby, who could move level with the Welsh side this weekend.

The Rams had put together a fantastic run throughout 2020, but that has fallen short in recent weeks. Phillip Cocu has seen his team fall short against some of the league’s biggest teams in recent weeks. Will they slip up against another member of the top six?

Rams struggle against playoff rivals
Derby’s playoff promotion chances look remote, even if they manage to haul themselves into the top six by the end of the campaign. While they were able to make their mark after the restart, the Rams have an awful record against their potential playoff opponents, following their 3-1 dismantling at home to Brentford at the weekend.

In their last three games, Derby have lost 3-1 to the Bees, 2-0 to West Brom and was seconds away from a home loss to Nottingham Forest. They have failed to win any of their 10 clashes with teams in the top six, while they have lost four of their last five visits to the sides from sixth and above. Those away losses have been comprehensive, conceding 10 times. Our predictions see them shipping more goals in the Welsh capital.

Bluebirds can move closer to playoffs
While Cardiff has also suffered back to back defeats, they look primed to bounce back in this one. They still managed to hit two goals at home to Blackburn in defeat here a week ago, while they’ve scored twice or more in three of their last four home matches. Meanwhile, Derby has shipped five goals in their last two games, conceding twice in two of their three away games since the restart.

The Rams have let in 40 goals on their travels this season at an average of 1.9 per game. They head to a Cardiff side who will want to stamp their authority on the game and in the chase for sixth. We expect the hosts to score a couple on Tuesday, with over 1.5 Cardiff goals our first prediction. We’re also backing the hosts to claim a 2-1 victory following Derby’s recent struggles.
