Lazio vs Cagliari Preview, Betting Tips and Odds

Lazio vs Cagliari predictions ahead of this Serie A clash on Thursday.

Boost for Lazio
A poor restart could get a lot worse for Lazio here, who are aiming to avoid an unwanted record in this clash with Cagliari. After going unbeaten in 16 home league games in a row (W12 D4), Lazio have since lost their last two such games at the Olimpico. The last time they lost three in a row at their ground was in November 2007.

On a brighter note, the hosts looked better in their loss to Juventus. They may have lost out in their bid to win the title, but the Biancocelesti have enjoyed a brilliant campaign and they can end it on a high. We are backing them to return to winning ways in our predictions here.

Both sides struggling for goals
Only Cagliari (two goals) have scored fewer goals than Lazio (three) in Serie A in July. That doesn’t exactly set this one up as a thriller. Cagliari come into this trip having scored in just one of their last five matches. Their form in front of goal has dipped in 2020, scoring only 16 times in 17 matches this year. Having scored 33 times in their first 17 games of the season, that’s a clear downturn. With Lazio failing to score more than once in their last five games, this looks like a low-scoring match.

However, one man who could make the difference here is Lazio’s Ciro Immobile. The forward has seen Ronaldo draw level with him in the scoring charts, with the pair hitting 30 goals each after 34 games of the season. Now they have a shootout in the final four matches, which should inspire the striker to get among the goals here. He scored his first goal in Serie A in a game against Cagliari in August 2012, when he was at Genoa. He has netted seven in nine appearances against the Sardinians so far, so Immobile is our anytime goalscorer prediction.

Lazio can return to form
The hosts should expect to bounce back here, not just because of their improved display against Juve. Lazio are unbeaten in their last 11 league games against Cagliari (W9 D2), while they have won their last eight home games against Cagliari in Serie A. On top of that, Biancocelesti boss Simone Inzaghi has faced Cagliari seven times as a manager in Serie A without losing against them (W5 D2). A victory would put them a step closer to having a perfect record against bottom-half sides, having won eight from eight so far.

We see Lazio claiming a win, while this is unlikely to be a thriller given these two have scored a combined five goals this month. Meanwhile, Cagliari have seen fewer than four goals in 71% of their away trips, including all but one of their defeats. Following that form, we are going with Lazio to win this clash and under 3.5 goals to be scored. On top of that, we’re backing a 2-0 victory as our correct score prediction, with nine of their 12 home wins coming by at least two goals.
