Manchester United vs Southampton

Manchester United’s emphatic run of form continued on Thursday evening as they put Aston Villa to the sword and won 3-0 at Villa Park, taking them to within a point of the Premier League top four and extending their unbeaten streak further.

The Red Devils are now unbeaten in 17 competitive games and have won four in a row in the Premier League. They are undoubtedly for most in-form side in the top flight right now, and that win at Villa puts their destiny in their own hands when it comes to the race for Champions League qualification.

13 of their 17 unbeaten games have ended in victory, a run which has not only helped them in the league but also in the cup competitions. They are among the frontrunners in both the FA Cup and Europa League, but their main goal is always going to be a return to Europe’s elite competition.

Saints face the difficult proposition
Southampton, unlike Aston Villa, did come into this difficult clash with form on their side. They are unbeaten in three Premier League matches and have picked up results against Everton and Manchester City in that period.

A top-half finish is a genuine possibility now, although with their safety confirmed it’s possible we may see a lack of motivation come into play over the next few weeks.

This Saints side – aided greatly by Danny Ings’ incredible form – might be a more difficult prospect than Bournemouth and Aston Villa, but they are by no means unbeatable. In fact, they have lost six of their last 11 league games and away from home, they have shipped 12 goals in their last six games.

Another comfortable win on the cards for the Red Devils
Manchester United’s devastating attackers’ ears will prick up at this revelation. Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood have now scored 39 Premier League goals between them this season and, aided by Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba behind them, there is no more feared attacking unit in England right now.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have scored at least three goals in each of their last four Premier League matches and in eight of their last 12 in all competitions. With Southampton shipping three or more in half of their last six away games, backing another flurry of Manchester United goals looks a solid prediction.

When it comes to the correct score prediction, the stats point clearly to one result. Manchester United have kept clean sheets in eight of their last 12 competitive games and have won by a 3-0 scoreline on five occasions during this period, so backing a repeat of Thursday night’s result is a good option.

Greenwood continues to fly
Bruno Fernandes’s arrival may have sparked a Manchester United resurgence, but there is no more talked about player in the Premier League right now than Mason Greenwood.

At the age of just 18, Greenwood has scored 16 competitive goals for Manchester United and averaged a goal every 111 minutes in the Premier League. That improves to a goal every 95 Premier League minutes when at Old Trafford, and even that impressive stat belies his true form.

Most of his appearances this season have come from the bench, but he has truly nailed down a spot in the starting 11 now and it’s worth noting that 13 of his goals have come from his 20 starts in all competitions.

His goal against Aston Villa was another blistering strike to reinforce the many high profile names that have complimented his finishing ability over the past few weeks and, with four goals in his last three games, backing him to get on the scoresheet once again looks excellent value.

Manchester United vs Southampton team news
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to name an unchanged starting lineup after truly settling on a first-choice team. Victor Lindelof shook off a back injury to play at Villa Park and will retain his spot in the backline, while the front three is once again expected to consist of Martial, Rashford and Greenwood ahead of a formidable midfield of Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic.

Manchester United predicted lineup: De Gea – Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw – Matic, Pogba – Rashford, Fernandes, Greenwood – Martial

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg could return to the starting lineup after coming off the bench against Everton, potentially pushing Oriol Romeu to the sidelines. Shane Long will also return to partner Danny Ings up front in place of Che Adams, while Sofiane Boufal, Jannik Vestergaard, Yan Valery and Moussa Djenepo will all miss out.

Southampton predicted lineup: McCarthy – Walker-Peters, Bednarek, Stephens, Bertrand – Armstrong, Ward-Prowse, Hojbjerg, Redmond – Ings, Long
