Olympiakos defender Ruben Semedo has been sentence for five-year for robbery, assault and kidnap

Another player joins the ranks of football personalities prosecuted by the Spanish authorities - but this time the charges are much more serious than tax fraud.

Olympiakos defender Ruben Semedo has been given a five-year suspended sentence and banned from visiting Spain for eight years, as per local media outlet Levante El Mercantil Valenciano.

Back in 2018, the then-Villarreal player was charged with numerous offences, including robbery, assault, kidnapping and possession of a firearm. After five months in prison, Semedo was released on a €30k bail to continue his career.

On Friday, a court in Valencia decided on the verdict, with the player admitting to many of the offences. As it turned out, the 26-year-old was acting on behalf of a third party to whom he was in debt.

Semedo left Spain in 2019 to join Olympiakos where he's established himself as a first-team regular. In October last year, he even received his first call up to the Portugal national team, although he's yet to earn a single cap.
