PSG vs St. Etienne predictions for Friday’s French Cup final clash between PSG and St Etienne.

Showpiece occasion for French football’s return
After becoming the only one of Europe’s big five leagues to cancel their season, French football resumes after a more than four-month suspension. The French kick things off by wrapping up last season, with the French Cup final this Friday, followed by the final ever French League Cup final next week. Meanwhile, the new Ligue 1 season is set to kick off next month.

It’s not only footballers returning to stadiums, as fans are also set to attend the games. As it stands, there will only be at most a crowd of 5000. St Etienne are expected to pass up on their allocation, taking that number down further. PSG will be hoping that’s yet another advantage for them, as they look to continue their domination of French football.

PSG hope for a silver summer
PSG was crowned Ligue 1 champions in April, having already moved 12 points clear with a game in hand. They could be rampant when it comes to silverware this summer, with a clash against Lyon in the League Cup final next Friday, before meeting Atalanta in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in mid-August. The Parisians have hit the ground running as they look for a successful summer, with some big wins under their belt already.

PSG have played two friendlies ahead of the final, winning 9-0 against Le Harve and 4-0 against Celtic. That has continued their good form in early 2020 when they won seven of their first nine Ligue 1 games. During that run, seven of those matches saw at least four goals, with PSG scoring four themselves in each of their last four in the league. When you compare that with a St Etienne side who lost 10 0f their last 14 Ligue 1 games, it’s no wonder we’re backing a PSG win in our predictions.

Parisians too strong
PSG have a great record against St Etienne, having scored at least four goals in three of their last four encounters. They met in the League Cup in January, with PSG racking up a 6-1 win. That continued their excellent cup form this term, having qualified for the final after a 5-1 win against Lyon in the semis and a 6-1 victory over Dijon in the last eight. We expect a similarly high-scoring win for the favourites in the final.

St Eitenne has had a poor 2020, which has been compounded by the fact that centre-half William Saliba has gone back to Arsenal after his loan ended. Given that their defence is now weaker, we fully expect PSG to rack up the goals in a one-sided win. However, given that PSG has seen both teams score in seven of their last nine competitive matches, we’re going with over 3.5 goals as our first prediction and a 4-1 victory as our correct score pick.

PSG scored four goals in each of their four Ligue 1 games before the shutdown and in two friendlies since
St Etienne have conceded four or more goals in three of their last four clashes with PSG
Both teams have scored in seven of PSG’s last nine competitive games
