Espanyol ask La Liga to scrap relegation this season

Barcelona's city-rivals Espanyol who got relegated to the Segunda by finishing bottom of the La Liga table in the 2019/20 season has asked the league to scrap relegation this term.

"Circumstances have arisen that have prevented the league from being held in equal conditions for all its participants," a part of the statement released on Monday reads, as quoted by Marca.

The Budgerigars have used such arguments as the absence of fans in the stands, the economic difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the number of the coronavirus cases in their squad during the lockdown to justify their plea.

"Baring in mind all the conditions that have come about since the return of competition and faced with the fact that, in the last few days, various clubs have raised their voice out of the injustice and lack of solutions that are being produced, Espanyol defends the elimination of relegation this season in competitions organised by LaLiga, just as has happened in all those organised by the RFEF," another part of the statement reads.
