Gareth Southgate impressed with Chelsea full-back Reece James' performance despite red card

James has to learn to control his emotions, says Southgate.

The manager adds that the right-back has impressed him all week.

James showed great maturity before the red card and has made a positive impression, adds the manager.

England manager Gareth Southgate told the media regarding Reece James after his first international start (via Metro): "That’s a lesson he’s got to learn [keeping his calm as he was sent off after the game]. He had an incredible debut, he’s impressed me all week.

"Until that moment he’d shown great maturity. It’s ended up something that shouldn’t have happened but for the overall week he’s made a positive impression."

James became the first English international to be sent off on his first start for the national team - he was shown the red card after the final whistle because he was arguing angrily with the officials over a decision in the game.

Regardless, as Southgate says, the right-back had a good couple of weeks and while James will be annoyed with the red card, he will also be happy with his performances overall as he comes back to Cobham.
