Koeman defends De Jong performance in Barcelona 1-1 draw against Sevilla: 'He has the right to play a bad game'

The Dutch coach concedes the midfielder wasn't up to it 2 weeks ago.

Yet De Jong proved his worth while playing for the national team earlier this week.

"Against Sevilla, he [Frenkie de Jong] was not up to it," Ronald Koeman made it clear, as quoted by Marca.

However, the coach defended the midfielder: "He is very self-critical. He knows when he's not at his level. He has the right to play a bad game; I'm not too worried about that.

The Dutchman concluded: "With the Netherlands, he was the best. We must not forget that he is very young."

Indeed, De Jong couldn't be happy with his display against Sevilla 2 weeks ago as he failed to add the much-needed creativity and lost the ball too often.

Yet the 23-year-old produced an impressive performance against Italy earlier this week, earning plaudits from rivals' coach and local press.
