Manchester United asked England U21 boss Boothroyd to leave out Greenwood

Manchester United asked England not to select Mason Greenwood for Under-21 duty due to injury and personal problems.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate discussed Greenwood before the senior squad was announced last week.

After he was left out of the senior side, the Manchester Evening News says United wanted the 19-year-old to rest.

"It was felt from Man United that the best course of action was to sit out this one. He has had a lot of niggling injuries and a lot of things going on in his life," England U21 boss Boothroyd said of Greenwood's omission.

"At this moment in time he hasn't made this particular squad nor the senior squad but having worked with him and knowing the sort of player and character he is, I am sure he will bounce back and be in and around it come March, because he is a very good player."
