Everton vs Chelsea Matchday preview Team news and predictions

Having enjoyed a stunning start to the 2020/21 campaign, Everton have had to endure a tougher time in recent weeks, and a run of just one win from their last seven Premier League fixtures has triggered a rapid descent down the standings for the Toffees.

Everton’s only victory since October 3rd came in a 3-2 triumph at relegation candidates Fulham in an end-to-end game at Craven Cottage that really could have gone either way after the hosts spurned a series of chances.

The Toffees’ recent regression under Carlo Ancelotti has raised a few eyebrows, and with a tough gauntlet of games on the horizon, starting with Saturday’s meeting with in-form Chelsea, things could get sticker still.

Chelsea continue to shine

A 14-game unbeaten surge – that included plenty of success domestically and on the continent – has put Chelsea in a confident mood ahead of their trip to Goodison Park, and the Blues will land on Merseyside as favourites to win.

Chelsea came from behind to beat Leeds 3-1 at Stamford Bridge last weekend to earn their fourth win in five Premier League attempts, and with top spot within swinging distance, the Londoners are firmly in the title race conversation.

The Blues have had little luck at Goodison Park in recent seasons, losing two and drawing one of their last three visits there, however, Frank Lampard’s side have a chance to turn that record back in their favour on Saturday.

Win but no clean sheet for Chelsea?

With top spot in Group E already secured, Frank Lampard was able to rest a whole host of his first team stars for Chelsea’s mid-week date with Krasnodar on Wednesday evening, and the Blues should arrive fresh and ready to push for victory against Everton on Saturday.

A lengthy run of poor results has left the Toffees’ confidence at a low ebb, and the performance in their disappointing 1-1 draw at Burnley last time out had all the hallmarks of a team lacking conviction.

In contrast, a Chelsea team that took 16 points from their last 18 in the league, seem to have found their flow and a tactical balance that gets the most out of their numerous new faces, and we think it’s worth piggybacking on the Blues’ momentum this weekend.

However, while a Chelsea win looks probable at Goodison Park, we don’t see the Blues leaving Merseyside with a clean sheet. Everton has failed to register only twice in their last 15 top-flight matches on their own patch, and the Toffees have enough bite to notch a consolation effort.

At the opposite end, Everton is conceding an average of 2.0 goals per game on home soil this season, however, and our 2-1 correct score prediction tips Chelsea to capitalise on their host’s frustrating habit of conceding in pairs.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is also worth your consideration this weekend as anytime goalscorer bet. The England international has spread his 11 Premier League goals this season across eight separate appearances and rarely does an Everton game pass without the 23-year-old making his presence felt.

Everton injuries and team news

Jean-Philippe Gbamin, Seamus Coleman and Lucas Digne will all miss Saturday's game for Everton though injury, while utility man Fabian Delph remains a doubt.

With issues at fullback prevalent, Carlo Ancelotti could revert to three at the back again for the Toffees.

Chelsea injuries and team news

Hakim Ziyech and Callum Hudson-Odoi both miss out for Chelesa, though Frank Lampard’s squad is looking strong elsewhere.

Kai Havertz might have to be content with a spot on the bench again after Mateo Kovacic’s impressive recent showings.
