'Modric was a very important factor against us': Gladbach boss

Madrid beat Borussia M'gladbach 2-0 on Wednesday to qualify for the Champions League last-16 round.

Marco Rose has singled out the 35-year-old for praise after the game.

“We have had that difficulty,” Borussia M'gladbach head coach Marco Rose said after his side's 2-0 loss at Real Madrid on Wednesday, as quoted by Managing Madrid.

“We gave Real Madrid too much time and space. Madrid played a different game than the first leg, Modric was a very important factor against us. We ran back a lot and we couldn’t get much of the ball.”

The Croat is showing no signs of slowing down despite being 35. Modric has featured in 17 games across all competitions this season so far, including seven starts for Zinedine Zidane's men on the bounce in the past few weeks.

“This time we weren’t where we had to be to play against a strong Madrid,” Rose continued.

“We allowed ourselves to be cornered. We simply had little faith and weren’t able to give them problems. Madrid was very dominant. When Madrid is under pressure they show a very high level, and it was difficult for us to follow it.”

Even though the Bundesliga side lost to the Whites in Madrid, both teams have qualified for the Champions League last-16 round.
