Ansu Fati? Presidential candidate Lluis Fernandez reveals no has come out of La Masia since Sergi Roberto

Presidential candidate Lluis Fernandez reveals no has come out of La Masia since Sergi Roberto

Lluis Fernandez laments that there are fewer Barca homegrown players who have made it into the first team.

He believes betting on the La Masia talents could help the club's financial situation.

"We need to speak with Ronald Koeman because there's a need to give opportunities to the players from the academy," Barcelona's presidential candidate Lluis Fernandez told Radio Marca.

"No starter has come out of La Masia since 2011 when Sergi Roberto did so. So, there's a need to speak to Koeman about this and about giving opportunities."

He added how turning to the academy could help Barca's financial situation: "From next year, we need to promote young players as we won't be able to sign as much and we'll need to reduce the wage bill."

It's a bit strange for Lluis Fernandez to forget about Ansu Fati: the 18-year-old joined Barca's academy in 2012, aged 9. He has started in 8 games out of 10 this season before suffering a serious knee injury.

Koeman also handed Oscar Mingueza his first-team debut. Since late November, the 21-year-old has made 11 appearances for the seniors.

Yet fewer chances have been given to Riqui Puig and Carles Alena: the latter was loaned out to Getafe for the rest of the season.
