Fabrizio Romano: Matip's injury force Liverpool into a search for central back

The centre-back was subbed out during half-time in our win against Spurs due to an ankle injury.

Klopp confirmed that Joel Matip has sustained ankle ligament damage, as per The Athletic's James Pearce.

The boss said that it is a 'serious' issue but there are no more details at the moment.

However, ligament damage is never a good sign and now the club is left with zero senior centre-backs for the foreseeable future.

The reliable reporter Fabrizio Romano said that Liverpool were 'convinced that they didn’t need a centre-back' earlier.

However, the situation can now change. The board will decide in the next few days how to tackle the situation at hand after receiving more updates on Matip.

There are only 3 days left for the transfer window to be shut - if the Reds do want to save their defence (and their season), they will need to act fast.
