The reason behind Leo Messi refusal to represent Spain despite being eligible

Messi once said that nothing can change what he feels for the Argentinian colours - but he could have won more silverware with La Roja.

Leo Messi was eligible to represent Spain instead of Argentina as he moved to the city of Barcelona at the age of 13.

Yet Messi was never going to swap his alliances as he revealed several years ago: "I would have never played for Spain. I'm Argentinian and no one and nothing can change what I feel for the Argentinian colours."

If Leo had opted for La Roja, his story could have been different - he would have won 2 European Championships and 1 World Cup, the trophy that has eluded him for years.

Messi would have been able to play alongside his Barca teammates - Puyol, Iniesta and Xavi - at the international level.

Yet Leo stayed true to his roots and pledged loyalty to Argentina: he is yet to win a major trophy with the Albiceleste, losing in 3 finals.
