Brighter times for Brighton

Monday night brings a renewal of the ‘why is it even a derby’ derby, when Crystal Palace visit Brighton. Both sides find themselves in the bottom half of the table and they should each be slightly concerned by Fulham creeping up behind them.

Brighton have pieced together a six-game unbeaten run to ease their relegation concerns. The Seagulls picked up their first home win of the season in that run, seeing off Tottenham 1-0. With Crystal Palace struggling, we can see the hosts adding to that in our predictions for this clash.

Palace lost without Zaha

While Brighton have seen their form turn around, Crystal Palace have suffered four defeats in their last six Premier League games. The Eagles have been beaten comfortably by Burnley and Leeds (3-0 and 2-0 respectively) in recent weeks and things could get worse here.

Crystal Palace have lost 18 of their last 20 Premier League games in which Wilfried Zaha hasn’t played, with the Eagles failing to score in 16 of those 18 defeats.

That impact will be even bigger here, given that Zaha has scored more goals in all competitions against Brighton than he has versus any other opponent in his English club career (7).

Eagles look vulnerable

Crystal Palace have failed to score in a higher share of their away games in the Premier League this season (58% – 7 of 12) than they have in any other campaign in the competition’s history. Meanwhile, they’ve conceded in 92% of their trips.

That mix has condemned Palace to six losses in 12 matches on the road this season. With Brighton looking stronger we see them capitalising on that bad run.

Brighton have kept a clean sheet in each of their last three home Premier League games. Considering Palace’s issues going forward we can see the Seagulls adding to that. A 1-0 home win for Brighton is our correct score prediction.
