Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur interested in Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa

Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur have both registered an interest in Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa as Gareth Southgate considers calling up the 23-year-old following his starring role for the Villans this season.

England U20 World Cup winner Konsa joined Villa from Brentford in a £12m switch in 2019, following former Bees boss Dean Smith to Villa Park for the club's return to the the top flight.

The London-born defender played 25 league games last season as Villa narrowly avoided relegation, but his performances this campaign have caught the eye of some of the big hitters, as well as Three Lions boss Southgate.

According to The Athletic, Villa are hoping to extend Konsa's current deal beyond 2023 with deflated Premier League champions Liverpool believed to be monitoring the defender.

Jurgen Klopp's side have been short of defenders this season following the injuries of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, but added Ozan Kobak and Ben Davies to their ranks before the close of the January transfer window.

The same report outlines that Spurs have had a longstanding interest in the 23-year-old, with Konsa reportedly an option when Toby Alderweireld's £25m clause was active in the summer of 2019.

Klopp and Spurs boss Jose Mourinho are looking to bolster their defensive ranks next summer, with Villa eager to tie their man down to extended terms to stave off interest from their bigger rivals.

Meanwhile, Konsa has emerged as a contender to be called up by Southgate for England's upcoming international round of fixtures.

The England boss has a plethora of defensive options at his disposal, having used Harry Maguire, Eric Dier, Kyle Walker, Tyrone Mings, Michael Keane and Conor Coady most recently.

Manchester City star John Stones is in line for a recall given his upturn in form with the Premier League leaders, while Konsa could be given an opportunity to impress for the World Cup qualifiers coming soon.

Southgate is aware of Konsa, having come through the youth ranks at St George's Park, while the FA is aware that he qualifies for Angola and DR Congo through his mother and father respectively. The Athletic also states that Konsa qualifies for Portugal and that the UEFA Nations League champions are monitoring him closely.

Konsa has notched nine clean sheets from 20 league appearances this season, helping the Villa to eighth in the table, ahead of Tottenham and Arsenal.
