Manchester United target two other players as they put Sancho transfer on hold

Manchester United have reportedly put their Jadon Sancho pursuit on ice for now as they look to strengthen in two other areas.

The 20-year-old winger was their primary transfer target last summer but United failed to meet Borussia Dortmund's asking price.

It was thought United would return for his signature at the end of this season once finances had improved after the initial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

But according to  The Athletic  , United have now cooled their interest in the player and are weighing up other options.

The report states that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is hopeful of adding a centre-back and a striker, and due to resources being tight, they may have to be prioritised over a fresh bid for Sancho.

Solskjaer is still an admirer of Sancho's talents and would welcome the chance to sign him if the opportunity presents itself, though needs to consider which areas of his squad are in greatest need of improvement.

The arrival of Amad, coupled with the abilities of Mason Greenwood in the right-forward role, have reduced the immediate need for a player in Sancho's position.

Dortmund's own financial situation has forced them to lower their demands, though the Bundesliga club are believed to still want in excess of £80million for the England ace.

Such an outlay could prove difficult for United, particularly if they want to sign other players, given they've had another season without fans present, which has had a huge impact on their matchday and commercial income.

Regardless, Solskjaer insists he has the backing of United's board to fund new acquisitions in the transfer window.

“We've got a plan to become a very successful Man United team - and a team that top players want to play for," he said.

“It's down to us to keep improving and getting closer to the trophies.

“I can't say anything about individuals. But we've got the backing.

“The owners keep backing the club and myself and hopefully we can improve the team.

“We are getting better, but we need to do better than last year when we got to three semi-finals.

“The next stage is to get into finals and establish ourselves again as challengers in the league.”
