Real Madrid boss Zidane refuses to choose between Mbappe and Haaland as his favourite

Real Madrid have been linked with sensational big-money moves for both Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland - but Zinedine Zidane has refused to reveal which of the two in-form strikers is his favourite.

Paris Saint-Germain frontman Mbappe and Borussia Dortmund ace Haaland have terrorised countless defences this season and were both on target for their teams in the recent round of Champions League fixtures.

And with his team heavily touted to swoop for either of the two superstars this summer, Zidane was asked to comment on their budding rivalry.

His answer was non-committal, however, although he did concede that both are 'very good'.

'I watch all the games and I like to see great things like any fan,' he said. 'They are both very good and very young, players of the present and for the future.

'Whether one or the other, I won't say, everyone has their own preferences.'

Mbappe was found in red-hot form against Barcelona in midweek. His stunning hat-trick has all but sealed a spot in the next round for the Ligue 1 champions already.

Haaland, meanwhile, insisted Mbappe's trio fuelled his desire to match his tally - and came agonisingly close after netting two goals in Dortmund's first-leg win at Sevilla.

Reports have indicated Madrid are keen to poach either of the young sensations in a long-term deal that would see them become the first-choice No 9 at the Bernabeu.

Sportsmail understands, however, that the club simply cannot afford to splash out on Mbappe this summer due to his eye-watering price tag.

It is believed PSG's valuation of the 22-year-old stands at €200m (£173m) - and Mbappe's hefty wage packet would only increase the package.

As for Norway international Haaland, Madrid are reportedly hopeful of using starlet, and compatriot, Martin Odegaard to land him.

Mundo Deportivo have claimed that the LaLiga giants will use Odegaard as a 'trump card' to lure Haaland to the Spanish capital due to the players' close friendship.

Haaland's desire for Champions League football every season will not pose a problem for Madrid, who trail neighbours and leaders Atletico by six points.

Across all competitions this season, Haaland boasts more goals than Mbappe.

The former Red Bull Salzburg man boasts 25 to his name, compared to the 21 netted by his newfound rival.
