'Arteta looking to activate Guido Rodriguez's £68m release clause this summer'

Arsenal are looking to activate Real Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez's £68million release clause.

Gunners scouts have been ‘closely monitoring’ the player for several months and it is believed Mikel Arteta will make a move for the 26-year-old when the window opens in the summer.

Rodriguez could be a promising addition to Arsenal’s ranks after helping Manuel Pellegrini's men rise to sixth in the LaLiga table this term.

The Argentina international is contracted to Betis until 2024 but could be set for a move to the Premier League this year.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the Spanish side are prepared to sell Rodriguez in the summer window for the right offer.

However, Betis will reportedly retain 25per cent of the player’s rights even if he leaves the club this summer.

Rodriguez joined Betis from Mexican outfit Club America in January 2020 for £2.7m after helping the club lift title in 2019.

Having been named Mexican Player of the Year in his final season at Club America, Rodriguez went on to continue his fine form in Spain.

Playing in the defensive midfield role, Rodriguez has been a near ever-present figure in the Betis squad since his arrival two years ago.

However, given the financial ramifications of the coronavirus pandemic, Betis are likely to offload a number of players this summer.

While Arteta will be looking to reinforce his squad after a disappointing Premier League run that currently sees them occupy ninth place in the table.

Arteta is also looking to add to his ranks after being left unsatisfied with the form of Thomas Partey - who signed for £45m from Atletico Madrid last year.
