The Fiorentina defender has been linked with a summer move away from Italy - with United one of the clubs along with Liverpool and Tottenham interested in his signature, according to Calciomercato.

And now the 23-year-old has excited United fans by revealing that his Serbian compatriot and Red Devils great Vidic was his childhood hero.

'When I was little, Serbian defender Vidic, who played for Manchester United, was my idol,' he told the club's official website, as quoted by Fiorentina.it.

'He was a very strong defender, I still watch the videos of his highlights today.'

The towering Serbian star has caught the attention of clubs across Europe this season after some solid displays in the heart of Fiorentina's defence.

Milenkovic has played 27 times in all competitions for Fiorentina this season, but he could soon be on his way out if clubs ramp up their interest.

United are interested in a new centre back going forward, as they look to provide a long-term partner for Harry Maguire - who has struggled to convince in the heart of defence playing alongside Victor Lindelof this season.

Milenkovic is an established Serbian international with 26 caps and has already surpassed 100 appearances for Fiorentina despite being at a relatively young age.

He joined Fiorentina in 2017 for a modest fee of £4.5million from Serbian outfit Partizan and is now a crucial member of the side.
