Manchester United to sell Lingard, Mata and three others this summer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could look look to offload four of his fringe players this summer in order to free up funds to improve his Manchester United squad.

According to the Metro; Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Phil Jones and Diogo Dalot could all be heading for the Old Trafford exit door in the upcoming window for a combined £60million.

The publication reports that Solskjaer has only been given a transfer budget of £80m to spend - which isn't enough for his overhaul of the Red Devils.

Like everyone else, United have been severely hampered financially due to the coronavirus pandemic. In the previous summer window Solskjaer spent £92.4m on five signings: Donny van de Beek (Ajax, £40m), Alex Telles (Porto, £15.4m), Facundo Pellistri (Penarol, £10m), Edinson Cavani (free) and Amad Diallo (Atalanta, £37m) - although the latter officially joined in the winter window.

This spending was offset by the £18m sale of Chris Smalling to Roma and Alexis Sanchez's free transfer to Inter Milan - releasing the club of his eye-watering £560,000-per-week wages.

And Solskjaer may have to sell some more of his unwanted squad in order to continue his rebuild.

It is believed that the Norwegian is targeting a centre back, defensive midfielder, right winger and centre forward - an outlay that will invariably cost more than £80m.

Lingard and Dalot are both impressing on their respective loan spells at West Ham and Milan - meaning United could generate cash from those clubs.

Lingard, 28, only has a season left on his current United deal but they are hopeful West Ham will meet their £20m valuation of him this summer, should he leave.

Dalot, who joined AC Milan on a season-long loan at the start of the season, has two years left on his current deal and United hope to sell him for slightly more than the £17.4m they paid Porto for his services in June 2018.

Mata, 32, is out of contract this summer but the Red Devils are expected to trigger his 12-month extension clause before looking to sell. Italian trio Juventus, Inter Milan and Roma are all interested in the Spaniard.

Jones' Old Trafford career has been plagued by injuries and the centre back hasn't played for the club since since January 26, 2020 - a 6-1 FA Cup fourth-round win at Tranmere Rovers, in which he scored in.

He is currently trying to overcome a longstanding knee problem that will see him likely miss the entire season.

The 28-year-old has two years left on his contract and United hope to recoup £10m for him with Newcastle, Burnley and West Ham all having shown an interest in the previous 18 months.
