Barca’s love affair with the Copa del Rey can continue

Just a fortnight on from losing the delayed 2019-20 Copa del Rey final to Real Sociedad, Athletic Bilbao may suffer a similar fate as they seek redemption in this season’s silverware-decider with Barcelona in Seville.

These are the two most decorated clubs in the Copa del Rey’s history and Barcelona have won the trophy six times in the last 11 years, on three occasions accounting for Bilbao in the final.

And recent form points to another Barcelona trophy success.

It has been somewhat of a disappointing season for the Catalan giants, but they are finishing the campaign much stronger than they started it.

Ronald Koeman’s men suffered a 2-1 defeat at La Liga title rivals Real Madrid last weekend, but they had claimed maximum points in 13 of their previous 14 league matches and are still within touching distance of leaders Atletico.

There are a number of promising youngsters coming through the ranks at the Nou Camp and in a few seasons it would be no surprise to see them back as Europe’s most potent force.

On the other hand, Bilbao are not operating to the same standards they were in 2020 and they have won only two of their last 15 games across all competitions in regulation time.

This will be the fourth meeting between these sides over the last four months and goals have been a common theme. Barca won two entertaining La Liga meetings – 3-2 and 2-1 – while Bilbao claimed Super Cup glory following a 3-2 extra-time win.

Expect the trend to continue, with Barca most likely to prevail. Both teams have scored in 17 of Bilbao’s last 21 assignments, while Koeman’s crew have kept just five clean sheets in 17 outings.
