Chelsea emerge as rivals for Metz starlet Pape Sarr

After becoming surprise challengers to Manchester City this season, Manchester United now need to strengthen if they are to finally lift the Premier League for the first time since 2013.

The Red Devils are set to see a squad overhaul when the summer transfer window opens, with some fringe members of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ’s squad departing.

That will allow United to bring in a higher calibre of player, which should allow them to kick on.

As well as outfield players, the goalkeeper department will require a refresh, with David de Gea, Lee Grant and Sergio Romero all set to leave Old Trafford.

Here, Mirror Football rounds up the latest Manchester United transfer news…

Chelsea emerge as Sarr rivals

Manchester United have reportedly been joined in their pursuit of Metz youngster Pape Sarr by Chelsea.

The 18-year-old joined the Ligue 1 side last September and has impressed since then, scoring three goals in 20 appearances.

The Sun recently reported that United were leading the chase for the midfielder, but it has now emerged that two Premier League clubs have joined them.

L'Equipe states that those clubs are Chelsea and Everton, who have now joined United as rivals for the teenager, who is valued at only £2.7million by transfermarkt.

United launch surprise Heaton move

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly launched a surprise move for Aston Villa keeper Tom Heaton after retracting Lee Grant’s extension offer.

With David de Gea, Sergio Romero and Grant all set to depart this summer, United will need a veteran back-up to Dean Henderson.

The Sun report that they have set their sights on Heaton to fill that role, with the Englishman out of contract at Villa at the end of the season.

With Emiliano Martinez securing the number one spot at Villa Park, it is unlikely Heaton will be offered a new deal by the Midlands club and would make the ideal target for United.

Red Devils face Plea challenge

After identifying Alassane Plea as a cut-price replacement for Edinson Cavani, United are set to have to see of the challenge of Arsenal for the 28-year-old’s signature.

Plea has impressed over numerous seasons in the Bundesliga but is likely to leave Borussia Monchengladbach this summer.

The Mail report that United have now been joined by Arsenal in the race to sign him for around £15million, with both clubs in need of a striker.
