UEFA Executive Committee can't sanction Real Madrid for Super League involvement

There are no legal grounds on which the UEFA Executive Committee can sanction Real Madrid for their involvement in the creation of a breakaway European Super League.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin on Wednesday threatened to immediately punish Los Blancos, mentioning the possibility of excluding them from their Champions League semi final tie with Chelsea.

The sanction referred to by Ceferin would revolve around the UEFA Executive Committee that will meet on Friday in order to decide the final venues for the European Championship and, incidentally, analyse what has happened during the week.

The aforementioned committee does not have the power to sanction Real Madrid or any club, as the body responsible for sanctions is the Disciplinary Committee. There is no legal basis for any possible action and, if necessary, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) would overturn the decision.

As various experts in sports law have confirmed to MARCA, there is no legal basis for a possible sanction, even at a later date.

Real Madrid have not violated any article of the competition regulations. There is no article that mentions the incompatibility of creating or presenting a parallel competition. In the Champions League regulations for the 2021-24 triennium approved on Tuesday, it does not mention it either.
