Villa fight for top-half finish

A fantastic first half to the season took Aston Villa from pre-season relegation candidates to shock top four contenders, but their form has tailed off since the turn of the year and Dean Smith now finds himself in a battle for a top-half finish.

The Villains did manage an impressive win at Everton last time out but they have won just two of their last nine games and any lingering hopes of European qualification are fading away fast, but they’re still in much better shape than many envisaged them being at the start of the campaign despite the continued absence of Jack Grealish.

Red Devils face gruelling run of fixtures

Manchester United fans can probably say the same as they head into the final five games of the season second in the Premier League and with a nine point cushion inside the top four.

However, their run in was thrown into disarray after fan protests saw their clash with Liverpool cancelled last weekend. They now face a run of three Premier League games in eight games, with that run starting just three days after a trip to Rome for the Europa League semi-final.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fielded a fairly strong team for that second-leg despite their commanding 6-2 aggregate lead, but defensive replacements at half-time cost them the game on the night as Alex Telles put in a shocker of a performance. The Red Devils lost 3-2 in Rome, but that will hardly have dampened spirits after Solskjaer reached his first cup final as Manchester United manager.

Expect goals at Villa Park

That 8-5 aggregate scoreline hints at an entertaining clash on Sunday. Manchester United have failed to score in just one of their last 11 games but have seen their defensive form start to slip of late, conceding six goals in their last four matches and keeping only one clean sheet.

Aston Villa have seen both teams score in each of their last five, so that’s what we’re backing alongside a 2-1 win for Manchester United as our correct score prediction. Villa have conceded exactly twice in three of their last four games and the Red Devils have won five of their last six league matches.

Aston Villa injuries and team news

Villa talisman Jack Grealish remains on the sidelines along with fellow gifted attacker Trezeguet. This leaves Ollie Watkins as the main goal threat as he leads the line ahead of Anwar El Ghazi, Ross Barkley and Bertrand Traore.

Manchester United injuries and team news

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have a lot of squad management to deal with in the next week but Marcus Rashford, Scott McTominay, Victor Lindelof and Dean Henderson should return after being rested in midweek. Edinson Cavani is expected to play up front again, while Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka will be fit to play after being replaced at half-time against Roma.
