Christian Pulisic becomes first US player to win Champions League

USMNT star Christian Pulisic has become the first American to win the Champions League medal following Chelsea's victory against Manchester City in the final in Porto.

Christian Pulisic has become the first US player to win the Champions League after Chelsea beat Manchester City in the final in Porto on Saturday evening in the Portuguese City of Porto.

2012 winners Chelsea claimed their second UCL title thanks to a lone first-half goal by Kai Havertz, stunning favourites City, who were seeking a historic treble and their first-ever European trophy.

Pulisic missed golden opportunity to score for Chelsea

Pulisic was not chosen to start the game by Blues coach Thomas Tuchel, but was eventually brought on to replace Timo Wener in the 66th minute.

And the US international even had a golden opportunity to double Chelsea’s lead in 73rd minute when he found himself one on one with City keeper Ederson, but he dragged his shot wide of the post after goalscorer Havertz had set him up nicely with a perfectly timed through ball.

Fortunately for Chelsea, Havert’s goal was enough as Tuchel’s team hung on until the end despite a barrage of pressure from City, who had a seven-minute period of injury time to find an equaliser.

For his part, Pulisic, the first US player to earn a Champions League medal, can look back on his valuable contribution to Chelsea’s title-winning campaign, in which he provided two goals and two assists in nine appearences.
