Firmino is 'the least-selfish striker' admits Thiago after Man Utd brace

Thiago Alcantara revealed he has never seen a striker as focused on helping the team as opposed to just scoring goals as Roberto Firmino.

The Brazilian scored twice in Liverpool's 4-2 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford, the first time he had found the back of the net since the end of January.

But while he praised Firmino's finishing ability, Thiago hailed his team-mate's selflessness when it comes to contributing to the Liverpool side.

'He's a very important player for us,' Thiago told Liverpool's official website.

'I think he's the least-selfish striker I've ever seen in my life because he always tries to reach the best option for his team-mates, but also he's a great goalscorer.'

Jurgen Klopp's team fell behind to a Bruno Fernandes deflected effort, but goals from Diogo Jota and Firmino put them in front at half-time.

Liverpool added to that after the break thanks to another goal from Firmino and a late Mo Salah strike, and in a game they had to win, they did just that at Old Trafford for the first time since 2014.

'We faced a strong team, they are playing amazing this season and I think for most of the second half we [were] the best version of us,' Thiago said.

'It was not so comfortable in the first half but we were very effective towards the goal.

'In the second, I think we dominated more, we created more chances and we could have scored even more goals than we scored.'

The win leaves Liverpool fifth in the Premier League and keeps their hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League alive.

They are four points behind Chelsea in fourth and have a game in hand over Thomas Tuchel's side, who face third-placed Leicester next week.

Liverpool will need to win their last three games of the season, against West Brom, Burnley and Crystal Palace, to have a chance of finishing in the top four, and Thiago believes he and his team-mates are coming into strong form at the right time.

'I think we correct a couple of mistakes from the past and we are reaching, not the best, but near a great version [of] us,' Thiago said.

'At the end, we have the same goal as each other – that's to reach the Champions League and the top four in the Premier League.'
