Danny Rose 'agrees deal to join Watford as former Tottenham outcast moves closer to finding a club'

Danny Rose is reportedly close to joining Premier League newcomers Watford after the former Spurs full back has agreed a deal in principle to join the Hornets.

The 30-year-old left-back is a free agent after his contract expired with his north London stay coming to end in highly unsatisfactory circumstances.

He was frozen out of the first-team picture by Jose Mourinho and hadn't played for the club since a 1-0 defeat to on January 11, 2020.

Rose spent the second half of that season on loan at Newcastle United but wasn't involved at all during the 2020-21 campaign.

And according to The Athletic, Rose is set for another shot at top flight football with Xisco's newly-promoted side.

The Hornets are understood to have struck a deal in principle with the former England international and the move to bring him to Vicarage Road on a free transfer could be announced early next week.

Rose would add much-needed experience to the Premier League newcomers, having made over 150 appearances for Spurs.

The 30-year-old's relationship with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy soured after Rose questioned the club's transfer policy on national radio.

Rose had taken aim at the club's ambition in the transfer market, saying Spurs needed to sign big names 'not players you have to Google and say, 'who's that?''

The defender was also engaged in a heated discussion with Jose Mourinho on Amazon's fly-on-the-wall documentary last year over his lack of playing time.

'How I'm being treated. I was very excited when you came as manager but if you don't want me to play, I'd rather you just told me now and I'll stay at home, gaffer. I'll train at home,' he said.

'It's facts. The whole changing room know it's facts. Not fair. And I'm going to see Daniel as well. So when Daniel's in tell him I'm looking for him.'

Watford have already sealed the signings of Imran Louza from Nantes for £9m, Grimsby's Mattie Pollock for £270,000 and Ashley Fletcher on a free transfer.
