In 2006 he was chosen by Steve Gibson with a five-year deal to be the manager of Middlesbrough even though he didn’t have any prior experience or qualification as a coach to manage the team.

This made the premier league board grant him a special dispensation that allowed him to continue managing the club after 12 weeks while completing his coaching courses.

After joining Middlesbrough, Southgate aimed to rebuild the team and sold most of the clubs’ veteran players while signing some fresh leg, including Herold Goulon.

He also signed permanent deals with Julio Arka from Sunderland, Chelsea’s Robert Huth, and Charlton Athletic’s Jason Euell.

In addition, the club added Jonathan Woodgate, who joined the team through a loan transfer from Real Madrid.

Although, starting the premier league that season with a loss to Reading, with the game ending at 3-2, they redeemed themselves by winning the match against Chelsea in a 2-1 win.

In January, the team won their first away match win against Charlton Athletic in a 3-1 win and had their highest-scoring match victory against Bolton Wanderers in a 5-1 win.

However, strings of poor display all throughout the campaign saw them end in 12th position that season.

The team was also eliminated from the League Cup when North County defeated them in a 1-0 loss.

They were also eliminated from the FA Cup by Manchester United in a 3-2 match loss.

In the 2007/2008 season, Southgate and the Middlesbrough management were able to get signed Jonathan Woodgate’s permanent signature and also added Heerenveen’s Afonso Alves to their ranks.

The club recorded its highest transfer fee with Afonso Alves, who joined them for 20 million euros.

Southgate recorded his highest win as a manager in the 2007/2008 season after condemning Manchester City to an 8-1 demolition.

The club made it to 13th place in the Premier League at the end of the season.

In the 2008/2009 season, the club’s net spending was low as they had spent heavily on new players the previous season.

The financial strain forced the club to relieve another club veteran and legend, resulting in the club losing one of their Legends, Mark Schwarzer, who has been with the club for 11 years.

The club also let go of George Boateng and Lee Cattermole, who were active key players in the team. the loss of crucial players left Southgate with a weak squad and depth.

He was still able to fight with what he had and was named the Premier League manager of the month in August after the team came out victorious in their first two out of three matches.

In November 2008, the club made it to eighth place in the league. They however fell into a poor run and lost the next 14 games before they defeated Liverpool.

They again lost their next match to Stoke City, raising call among fans that Southgate’s should be dismissed as the club manager.

Under pressure to decide, Middlesbrough Chairman Steve Gibson stated that dismissing Southgate would not make the situation better.

The club was relegated to the championship after losing to West Ham United in a 2-1 defeat, bringing which left them at 19th place in the league.

Following the club’s relegation, Southgate was eager to get the club back to the Premier League and even won his first Championship match against Derby County in a 2-0 win.

However, the club management had other plans, and Southgate was dismissed before Middlesbrough’s Championship campaign got to half of the season.

Gibson stated that the decision was made in the club’s best interest.

Bottom line, Gareth Southgate trophies remain zero so far.

England National Team
Despite a trophyless run as a club manager, Southgate has enjoyed more success with England National team and may have a trophy to show for it when a young firebrand but slightly inexperienced England lock horns with the more groomed and experienced Italy for the Euros 2020 Final on July 11th, 2021.
