Liverpool 'to open talks' over new deal with captain Jordan Henderson

Liverpool are ready to open discussions with Jordan Henderson over a new contract to extend his stay at the club.

The Liverpool captain who has now been at the club for a decade, has entered the final two years of his current deal.

As reported by the Mirror, the Reds are looking to tie Henderson to a deal that could see him end his career at Anfield.

It comes as Liverpool also plan on extending the contracts of the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Mo Salah and Alisson.

The England international was signed by Kenny Dalglish in 2011, joining from Sunderland for around £16million.

There was a point where his Liverpool stay looked like it wouldn't last long, with talk in 2012 that Henderson could move to Fulham with now-retired American international Clint Dempsey moving the other way, after a tricky start to life at Anfield.

Henderson rejected the move, declaring his intention to stay and fight for his place.

It was a decision that turned out well for both parties as Henderson replaced Steven Gerrard as captain three years later and led their resurgence to the summit of English and European football.

The Englishman lifted the Champions League in 2019 before helping Liverpool win win their first league title in 30 years last summer.

The 31-year-old, who is due a testimonial at the club after ten years, suggested he would be happy to finish his career at the club, the last time he signed a contract in 2018.

'It doesn't seem like too long ago when I signed my first one – it feels like yesterday, really – but a lot has happened since then.

'I feel it's been a progressive journey for me throughout my time here and one I've enjoyed so much.

'There is no other place in the world I would rather play football. I want to be here for as long as I can be.'

With his midfield partner of five-years Georginio Wijnaldum leaving the club this summer, the club are on the hunt for a new player to challenge Henderson, Thiago and Fabinho.

The Reds have been linked with a £64million move for Leicester's Youri Tielemans while Atletico Madrid's Saul Niguez and Lyon's Houssem Aouar are also said to be targets.
