Barcelona reach agreement with Busquets over pay cut

This Wednesday, August 25, has seen Sergio Busquets reach an agreement with Barcelona to reduce his salary, as the midfielder looks to help his club's precarious financial situation.

The agreement was reached during a meeting on Wednesday morning between Jose Maria Orobitg, the player's agent, and Barcelona CEO Mateu Alemany, but there remain some loose ends to be tied up.

Busquets will have a 25 percent pay cut as he follows in the footsteps of Jordi Alba, who agreed a pay cut of the same percentage on Monday.

The 33-year-old will no longer gain a bonus for certain tasks that are deemed routine at the club, such as Champions League qualification, and he will also defer part of his salary in the coming years.

Barcelona have now agreed pay cuts with three of the squad's four captains, as Gerard Pique became the first to do so, but they have yet to agree a salary reduction with Sergi Roberto.

The club are currently negotiating with Sergi Roberto's representatives, but these negotiations are slightly different as the pay cut would be part of a new two-year contract.

However, both Barcelona and Sergi Roberto's camp are looking to reach an agreement by the end of the month.
