Gilmour reveals Norwich's style of play made them his first choice for loan move

Billy Gilmour has revealed that Norwich's style of football made the club his 'first choice' for his loan move away from Chelsea.

However, the 20-year-old still sees his future at Stamford Bridge and wants to use his opportunity with the newly-promoted Canaries to make a strong impression on the Blues.

Gilmour, who attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, said speaking to Norwich manager Daniel Farke sealed the deal for him.

'I had some options but for me Norwich was first choice. I came here, spoke to the boss, and everything he said sounded really good, the way he wants to play, the way he sees me fitting in,' Gilmour told Sky Sports.

'That was what made my choice easier to come to Norwich.

'Norwich play football that suits my style, playing out from the back and wanting to keep the ball. For me, this was the perfect opportunity. This is my kind of style of play where I want to play out, get on the ball and make things happen.

'When I was speaking to the boss, he was just saying that he sees me in this position in midfield or he sees me in that position in midfield, it just depends on the formation. He has been really good with me and I am learning under him every day.'

Gilmour announced himself on the world stage this summer with a hugely impressive performance in Scotland's 0-0 draw with England at Euro 2020, where he was awarded man of the match.

But with the glittering array of global midfield superstars at Thomas Tuchel's disposal, the young Scot has found opportunities at Chelsea hard to come by.

Last season he made only 11 appearances across all competitions, making just two starts for Chelsea in the Premier League.

Therefore the big attraction of a loan move for Gilmour is to play regular first-team football, something he openly recognised was a problem at his parent club.

'I think the most times that I would play for Chelsea was two games in a row,' he said.

'I had to come out and get more experience of first-team football. I need regular football to develop. If I am playing week in and week out I will become stronger, sharper, I will become more aware.'

Gilmour was also clear that joining Norwich for the season is part of his larger plan to get back to Chelsea and nail down a regular starting place, and it seems the Blues are keen to hang onto the promising young talent.

'(Chelsea) are in contact, they will watch games and send me highlights, look at what I can do better,' he said.

'That is the aim: have a really good season here with Norwich, go back to Chelsea and see what happens.'
