Guardiola: Man City will be without Foden & De Bruyne 'for a while'

Pep Guardiola will be without key players Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden for some time yet as Manchester City prepare to begin their season with the Community Shield.

Foden missed England's Euro 2020 final because of a foot injury and has been wearing a protective boot having left the Three Lions camp on crutches after the tournament.

It had been hoped the 21-year-old would return to training in the next few days along with the rest of City's England contingent but Foden will need a little longer.

De Bruyne is still feeling the effects of an injury picked up during Belgium's Euro 2020 campaign and Saturday's Community Shield meeting with Leicester at Wembley will come too soon.

However, unlike Foden, he may have a chance of being fit for City's Premier League opener at Tottenham next Sunday.

Guardiola said on Friday: 'Phil will be out for a while, a tough injury, we have to be careful with it.

'Kevin is still out. I think he will come back a bit sooner than Phil apparently. But both are still out for a while.'

He added: 'Today, the managers in the big clubs, there are many internationals - we cannot work. We are here to handle the team spirit as well as possible, that time when you have four or five weeks to prepare.

'Half of the team is out and we don't complain. It's a pleasure to play the Community Shield. I'm lucky in the sixth season and my players know what they have to do.

'So difficult, the schedule is crazy, so tough.'

However, City's midfield could be bolstered by new £100million signing Jack Grealish, who is likely to start among the substitutes at Wembley and could make his debut.
