Juventus favourites to reclaim Serie A title

The new Serie A season begins this weekend and Juventus are the clear favourites to claim the Scudetto.

After a forgettable showing last season which saw them scrape fourth place on the final day of the campaign, Max Allegri's side are well fancied to reclaim the crown they had won in each of the previous nine years.

It is not that the Turin side have spent extravagantly to reinforce their squad in the transfer market, far from it, yet the return of Allegri to the club, coupled with the implosion of last year's champions Inter, make it likely that normal service is resumed in Italy.

Juventus are priced at 4/5 (1.80) with bet365 to be crowned champions ahead of Inter who are offered at 4/1 (5.00).

It has been a turbulent summer for the Nerazzurri with the joy of lifting their first Scudetto in 11 years quickly dispersed by the financial problems engulfing the club.

Top scorer Romelu Lukaku and full-back Achraf Hakimi have made big-money exits following manager Antonio Conte out of the door and there could still be more players leaving before the end of the month.

New manager Simone Inzaghi will know he will have work to do if the side are to qualify for the Champions League next season let alone defend their title.

Atalanta, meanwhile, are offered at 11/2 (6.50) to win what would be their first ever title and those are surely the shortest odds ever for the side from Bergamo.

Gian Piero Gasperini has retained the core of the squad which finished third last term, while the impact of Cristian Romero's exit should be negated by the arrivals of Matteo Lovato and Merih Demiral.

Next in the betting come Napoli at 10/1 (11.00), the side who finished fifth last season but were only two points off second place.

Luciano Spalletti's replacing of Gennaro Gattuso at the helm should bring some stability and the Partenopei can be backed at evens (2.00) to claim a top-four berth, something they have managed in six of the last nine seasons.

Elsewhere in the market AC Milan are priced at 12/1 (13.00) and, after a number of years in the wilderness, the Rossoneri will return to the Champions League this term having finished as runners-up to their eternal rivals.

Goalkeeper Gigi Donnarumma has left the club although Milan have bought shrewdly and his replacement Mike Maignan from French champions Lille looks like an excellent acquisition.

Further down the market come Jose Mourinho's Roma who can be backed at 18/1 (19.00) to be crowned champions for the first time in two decades.

Claiming the title may be beyond the former Chelsea, Manchester United and Real Madrid manager but a return to the Champions League will surely be the minimum expected by the club after their outlay to acquire Mourinho's services.

The capital club finished 16 points off fourth place last season but are offered at 6/4 (2.50) to qualify for Europe's premier club competition.
