Sevilla beat Atletico Madrid to the signing of Rafa Mir

Rafa Mir is expected to finalise his transfer from Wolves to Sevilla this Thursday. The 24-year-old had been close to joining Atletico Madrid, but has chosen to sign for Julen Lopetegui's side and will fly to southern Spain to finalise the deal.

Mir is expected to set Los Nervionenses back 16 million euros, with the contract running until 2026.

Sevilla tried to sign Joselu from Alaves earlier in the summer, but no deal could be agreed with the Basque side and they have now found an alternative striker who also knows LaLiga Santander well.

Mir spent last season on loan at Huesca, where he scored 16 goals in 39 appearances, and ended the campaign representing Spain at the Tokyo Olympics. Such has been his development as one of the young stars of Spanish football, there are few doubts about his ability to take over the role of Sevilla's leading frontman.

One consequence of Mir's arrival will likely be the departure from the club of Luuk de Jong, who is hopeful of securing a move back to his native Netherlands with PSV Eindhoven.

Sevilla have been one of the more active Spanish clubs in this summer's transfer window as they had already signed the likes of Gonzalo Montiel and Erik Lamela.
