Southampton vs Manchester United Football Preview and Predictions 2021

Southampton vs Manchester United predictions for Sunday’s Premier League contest at St. Mary’s Stadium. Manchester United look to build on a fantastic opening weekend when they visit Southampton. Read on for all our free predictions and betting tips.

Manchester United are unbeaten away from home in the Premier League since January 2020.
Southampton haven’t beaten Manchester United at St Mary’s since 2003.
Manchester United have won two of their last four Premier League away days by a 3-1 scoreline.
Manchester United have won and both teams have scored in their last two Premier League away games.
Eight of Manchester United’s last ten Premier League games have featured over 2.5 goals.

Saints fail to impress in opener
Southampton were one of our pre-season tips to get relegated this season and their performance in the opening game against Everton has done little to change our minds in that regard despite Adam Armstrong’s impressive debut goal.

The Saints fell apart in the second half at Goodison Park to lose the gap 3-1 and they have now lost six of their last nine Premier League matches, conceding 18 goals in the process.

Their record against Manchester United doesn’t bode well, either. Their last clash resulted in a ridiculous 9-0 win for the Red Devils and they haven’t beaten the Manchester side since 2016. Their last win against them at St Mary’s came all the way back in 2003, so it certainly looks like the visitors’ favouritism is justified.

Greenwood flies under the radar
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side certainly opened their campaign with a bang as they thrashed Leeds 5-1 at Old Trafford, with Paul Pogba laying on four assists and Bruno Fernandes bagging his first hat-trick for the club.

Those two were rightly frontrunners for the man of the match award, but an honorary mention goes to Mason Greenwood. The young striker took his goal well and has now scored seven goals in his last nine Premier League appearances. I’m backing him to punish the dodgy Southampton defence on Sunday.

Man Utd on course for another win
As far as the overall result goes, it’s hard to look beyond Manchester United. They went unbeaten away from home in the league last term and have an excellent record against Southampton, so I’m opting for an away win.

A repeat of the 3-1 scoreline at Goodison Park looks on the cards, too. Manchester United have only kept one clean sheet in their last five Premier League trips away and two of those have ended in 3-1 victories, so that’s my choice for a correct score prediction.

Southampton predicted lineup: McCarthy; Walker-Peters, Bednarek, Salisu, Perraud; Armstrong, Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Djenepo; Adams, Armstrong

Manchester United predicted lineup: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw; McTominay, Fred; Sancho, Fernandes, Pogba; Greenwood
